Kayaking vs. Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): What’s the Difference?

It’s one of the most common questions we get from folks planning a day out on the water: Should I kayak, or should I stand-up paddleboard?

While Nokomis Paddle Co. is currently launching exclusively with our stable, comfortable kayak fleet, we have high-quality stand-up paddleboards joining the family very soon!

Both crafts offer an incredible way to escape the shore, explore the mangroves, and get up close with local wildlife—but they offer completely different experiences. To help you figure out which style matches your vibe for future adventures, let’s break down how they stack up.

1. The Learning Curve

  • The Verdict: Kayaking has a gentler learning curve, but paddleboarding is easier than it looks.

If your main goal is absolute stability from the very first second, kayaking is king. You sit low in the water, giving you a perfect center of gravity. It is incredibly stable, virtually impossible to tip over by accident, and requires zero balance. You just sit, paddle, and go—which is why it’s our launch favorite.

Paddleboarding (SUP) requires a tiny bit more bravado because you are standing upright, forcing you to use your stabilizer muscles. However, modern paddleboards are wide and thick—they feel more like floating sidewalks than surfboards! Most beginners go from kneeling to standing within ten minutes.

2. The Workout

  • The Verdict: Paddleboarding is a full-body burner; Kayaking is all about the upper body and core.

If you want a stealthy full-body workout, paddleboarding takes the crown. Because you are standing, every single muscle from your toes to your neck is engaged just to keep you upright.

Kayaking is a fantastic workout too, but it’s highly focused on your upper body, shoulders, and oblique (side) core muscles. If you have lower back issues or trouble standing for long periods, a kayak gives your legs a complete break while still letting you burn plenty of calories.

3. The View

  • The Verdict: Paddleboarding gives you the “aquarium view.”

This is where the paddleboard shines. Standing up gives you an incredible vertical vantage point. You can look straight down into the shallow water rather than across it, making it amazing for spotting sea urchins, starfish, and passing fish.

In a kayak, you sit closer to the water’s surface. While you lose that straight-down angle, you gain a perfect eye-level view of the shoreline, making it unmatched for paddling underneath low mangrove canopies and getting up close to birds roosting in the roots.
